How 4.6 Seconds Can Change Lives and Companies

At 55 miles per hour, a car or truck travels 100 yards in just 4.6 seconds.  The average length of time drivers are distracted  and look away from the road on electronic devices while texting is 4.6 seconds, according to a Virginia Tech study. During these few seconds lives can be changed forever. So what is the risk?  According to this study these drivers are 23.2 times more likely to have an accident.

Some additional statistics to help you understand the risk involved with these distractions

  • Dialing Cell Phone - 5.9 times higher than non-distracted driver
  • Use/Reach For Electronic Device - 6.7 times higher than non-distracted driver
  • Text Messaging - 23.2 times higher than non-distracted driver

The bottom line is that anything that takes your eyes off the road for even a few seconds puts you at risk.  In the real world the act of talking and listening on the phone does not present the same risk as reaching for something or texting which takes your eyes off the road. Keep in mind that intense or emotional cell phone conversations can still create a diversion from focusing on driving and avoiding possible accidents. Stay focused, keep your eyes on the road and reduce the risk of costly accidents and life altering event.

Distracted Driving - A growing problem

Distracted Driving - A Growing Problem

We all know the main reasons for fatal and serious injury crashes.  Drivers are not paying attention, are distracted, alcohol and speeding.  There is now the added danger of cell phone use while driving.  According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Association, at any point during daylight hours, over 800,000 vehicles are being driven by someone using a hand-held cell phone. If you own a business, then know that some of your employees may be conducting business behind the wheel with a cell phone.

If they cause an accident, their employer could be responsible not just for workers' compensation and disability claims, but also for liability judgments and for fines associated with criminal vehicular activity.

You can help save lives and money by making them aware of the risk they face when employees use cell phones while driving on company business. Please take a minute to read The Hartford's Distracted Driving - A Growing Problem.   This is a great read with information and resources to help develop their own distracted driving policies.

FMCSA Reaches Settlement Agreement in National Association of Small Trucking Companies Litigation on the Compliance Safety Accountability Program

Washington, DC – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)announced it has reached a settlement with three trucking associations that will end litigation over information published on FMCSA’s website.

"CSA is a safety program designed to reduce commercial motor vehicle-related crashes and save lives,” said FMCSA Administrator Anne S. Ferro. “Through this settlement agreement, we addressed the concerns raised by petitioners without compromising the CSA program and its safety benefits.”

The NASTC and the TEANA and the Air & Expedited Motor Carriers Association (AEMCA) filed suit on Nov. 29, 2010 challenging FMCSA’s CSA program. Under the agreement, FMCSA will make changes to CSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) public website to address concerns regarding the display of information on a commercial motor carriers’ safety performance.

The key changes that FMCSA will make to the SMS public website by March 25, 2011 are as follows:

  • Replace any ALERT symbol currently displayed in orange on the SMS website with the following symbol of the exclamation mark inside a gold triangle Triangle! Graphic
  • Revise the disclaimer language on the SMS website to read:
“The data in the Safety Measurement System (SMS) is performance data used by the Agency and enforcement community. A Triangle! Graphic symbol, based on that data, indicates that FMCSA may prioritize a motor carrier for further monitoring. The Triangle! Graphic symbol is not intended to imply any federal safety rating of the carrier pursuant to 49 USC 31144. Readers should not draw conclusions about a carrier’s overall safety condition simply based on the data displayed in this system. Unless a motor carrier in the SMS has received an UNSATISFACTORY safety rating pursuant to 49 CFR Part 385, or has otherwise been ordered to discontinue operations by the FMCSA, it is authorized to operate on the nation’s roadways. Motor carrier safety ratings are available at http://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov and motor carrier licensing and insurance status are available at http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov.”

On Dec. 13, 2010, FMCSA launched its CSA enforcement program that is used to analyze all safety-based violations from roadside inspections and crashes to measure a commercial motor carrier's on-road safety performance. CSA allows FMCSA to reach more carriers earlier and deploy a range of corrective interventions to address a carrier's specific safety problems before crashes can occur.
